Our History

The Kallisto Kastanitsa is the first step in the vision of Panagiotis Alivanoglou for the promotion of Kastanitsa and the surrounding area as a destination for mild, ecological and cultural tourism. With an origin by his mother from Kastanitsa himself, the grandson of "Gritsos", as was his grandfather's nickname, grew up in Athens flooded with memories of childhood trips to the village, with games and explorations in the forest, with the serpentine Tsakonian dance at festivals, with the stories of the grandparents in an unknown but charming local dialect. But as the ancestral lot was small and he himself did not have a house in his place of origin, he was looking for a way to house this experience more permanently, but, above all, to share it with those who are looking for this unexplored, authentic, full of hidden treasures, Greece.

Callisto, the «most beautiful»

The opportunity arose when an elderly couple from the village, emigrants to Canada, wanted to sell their house, but preferred not to give it to "foreign hands". This house, a stone building from the last century, was bought and after being completely renovated, with absolute respect for the traditional architecture of the place, it became the middle of the three buildings of the guesthouse. Two more new buildings, built in the same way, flanked the original one and the dream came true.

And then through the Arcadian forest came the Nymph Callisto and with a kiss imprinted her name on the newborn guesthouse. Callisto, the "most beautiful", as her name indicates, the daughter of the king of Arcadia Lycaon and companion of the goddess Artemis. Callisto, who was loved by Zeus and gave birth to his son Arcada, the great hero of Arcadia. But Artemis, who was angry with Callisto for breaking her vow of virginity, transformed her into a bear. And little Arcada was raised by a mountain goddess, Maia. When Arcadas grew up, one day he accidentally went hunting to kill his mother, but Zeus, in order to prevent matricide, transformed him into a bear who immediately recognized who was standing in front of him. And then he took the mother and the son, beloved, to the sky and made them constellations the Ursa Major and the Ursa Minor. And if the visitors of "Kallisto Kastanittsa", raise their eyes to the sky, will find her there, but also, if they listen carefully, in the silence, they could hear between the trees the rustling of the veil, that of beautiful Nymph of Arcadia.
