Vamvakou: Vamvakou is a mountain village built at an altitude of 900 meters, NE of Sparta. It was built in the mid-15th century and was originally called Paleochora. In Vamvakou are the churches of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (the original building was erected in 1760, destroyed during the invasion of Ibrahim in 1826 and demolished in 1898), of the Holy Trinity and of Saint George, while in close proximity is the monastery of Saint Kyriaki.
The village maintains a strong traditional color. In the central square, with its centuries-old plane trees, the three-story church of the village stands out, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Saint Charalambos and Saint Paraskevi. In its precincts stands the statue of Theodoret II, Bishop of Vrestheni, as well as the busts of Spyros and Stavros Niarchos, while in recent years, with the establishment of the organization "Vamvakou Revival", with the assistance of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the village has experienced significant development with pioneering educational programs and cultural events.
